Garden

Created in 2002, the BIS garden survives and thrives with the love of students and staff who have given their time to help this plot of land grow and flourish.

Our garden features fresh greens, assorted herbs, tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, potatoes, beets, radishes, corn, chilies, lettuce, squash, peppers, sunchokes, artichokes, beans, peas, broccoli, garlic, onions, scallions, leeks, ground cherries, strawberries, raspberries, grapes, and flowers to attract pollinators. We also have apple, lavocado, pomegranate, mandarin, lemon, lime, and fig trees.

Garden classes meet every Friday. The class is supervised by a dedicated garden teacher and credentialed staff. Garden classes are structured in three parts:

  1. Students and teachers tending to their crops.

  2. Harvesting the bounty of plants tended in previous sessions.

  3. Enjoying the fruits of our labor by preparing and feasting on fresh, homegrown food.

All students are invited to join our Friday garden classes. Email Aimee Ellis at aimeeellis@berkeley.net for more info.
